Core To Score

Written by Nicole Pinter
Every golfer’s goal is to increase accuracy and distance and the best way to do it is to work on physical performance. Core strengths are the key to better distance. Working on your core can create a more powerful golf swing. Instead of buying a new driver or spending money for lessons sometimes, just a simple workout can change your game.
The following yoga poses are great to increase core strengths.
- Bird dog
Bird dog starts down on all fours and requires you to extend one leg out behind you until it’s parallel with the floor while extending the arm on your opposite side out in front. You may feel a little shaky at first since this is working your glutes and hips in addition to your core.

- Bridge pose
Lie on your back with your arms alongside your body, palms facing downwards, pressing into the floor. Bend your knees, planting the feet into the mat, hip width apart. Between your glutes and your ankles should be the distance of one handbreadth. Press firmly your feet into the ground, engage thighs and glutes.

- Side plank
Begin seated sideways on the floor with your right hand below your right shoulder and feet stacked. Lift your body into a side plank position so legs are long, keeping your abdominals engaged and your feet stacked. Hold for desired amount of time.

- Plank
Draw out your chest to the front coordinated with a big inhalation. Let your arms come perpendicularly to the floor and shoulders positioned at a point right over the wrists and the torso maintained parallel to the floor.
Repeat these exercises daily and get your game to the next level.
